Plan Your Visit to Congaree National Park

With so much to do in Congaree National Park, it’s important to plan ahead. There are more than 25 miles of hiking trails, canoe trails to explore Cedar Creek, and fishing opportunities, so remember these tips for visiting Congaree National Park.

  • Visit any time of year: Congaree National park is open 24 hours a day, all year round. The Harry Hampton Visitor Center is open from 9am to 5pm seven days a week, except on federal holidays.
  • Check with the staff: Before heading out on a canoe or kayak, check with the park staff about current water levels and conditions. Low water or flooding is possible and may impact your waterway plans.
  • Leave motorized vehicles behind: All motorized vehicles and watercrafts are prohibited in Congaree National Park, so leave them at home.

Congaree National Park Camping

When it comes to tips for visiting Congaree National Park from Irmo or anywhere else in the area, it’s important to keep camping requirements in mind. Here are a few main points if you plan to camp:

  • Reservations are required for the two frontcountry campgrounds (Longleaf Campground and Bluff Campground), and a valid permit is required to camp in the backcountry.
  • Only tents and hammocks are allowed in the campgrounds.
  • Fires are permitted in the fire rings only at the two campgrounds. Open fires are not allowed in the backcountry.
